Seventeen years, one question
In 2008 I lost my mother to brain cancer.
What I remember most from that year isn't the treatment or the hospitals. It's the questions — the ones I asked and couldn't get a straight answer to, and the ones I didn't know to ask until much later, when it was already too late to matter.
I was acting in Hollywood at the time. I had a career I'd worked years for. And I found I couldn't go back to it, because I couldn't stop asking.
So I started travelling. I found doctors, researchers and scientists who would sit down with a camera and answer properly — people in clinics and laboratories across the world who had spent their own careers on the same question. Some of those conversations lasted an afternoon. Some of them turned into years of correspondence.
That was seventeen years ago. The footage from that first stretch is still in the film.
I never planned to make a documentary. I planned to find something out. The film is what happened while I was looking.
